Reform of Higher Education in Muslim Societies PDF Print E-mail

As part of its ongoing efforts to address the multi-faceted crisis of education in the Muslim world, IIIT organized a two day symposium entitled “Reform of Higher Education in Muslim Societies”. The symposium was held in collaboration with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC and took place at the Wilson Center’s headquarters on December 9th and at IIIT headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, on Dec 10th, 2013. The main objectives of the symposium were: 1) to identify the root causes of the crisis of higher education in Muslim societies, 2) to examine the current manifestations of the crisis and its implications for socioeconomic development in Muslim countries, and 3) to discuss possible pathways to reform that involves governments, institutes of higher learning and other civil society organizations. About thirty scholars, experts and opinion leaders from different backgrounds and institutions participated in the roundtable discussions that extended between Dec 9th and Dec 10th, 2013.

Welcome to Int. Conf. on Contemporary Scholarship on Islam: The Legacy of Ismail Raji Al Faruqi (ICCSIF) 2013 Conference : 22-23 Oct, 2013 IIUM, Kuala Lumpur PDF Print E-mail

For the Department of Usul al-Din and Comparative Religion, Professor Ismail al-Faruqi is especially meaningful and is highly appreciated. He is the source of her inspiration for her courses in comparative religion. It is to honor and commemorate this great scholar-activist that the Department organizes this seminar. Thus, it is with great pleasure that we invite scholars to examine the intellectual legacy of one of the greatest Muslim scholars of our time, Professor Ismail Raji al-Faruqi.

Al-Faruqi’s works cover a vast area of academic interest. His main concern lies with the development and reform of contemporary thought across civilizations. The paradigm of Tawhid occupied central place in his thought and his monumental work Al Tawhid: Its Implications for Thought and Life is especially well received. As a professor of the study of religions, he discussed Islam and other faiths, particularly, Christianity and Judaism. He provided a new framework to the study of comparative religion and analyzed a wide spectrum of inter-religious issues, including commonalities and differences between them.

The experiences he attained from these places, especially the academic exposures and the social interactions with various people, scholars and the masses alike, stimulated his thoughts and enhanced his vision and mission for the advancement of the Ummah. Clearly, he was convinced of the superiority of Islamic revelation above the tradition of modernism. Consequently, he inspired change through the process of Islamizing knowledge which culminated in the emergence of the movement for Islamization of Knowledge and the reform of Muslim thought.

He studied and taught in western and eastern universities, including in America, Egypt, Canada, Pakistan, and was a visiting scholar to many more, including in Malaysia. He helped founded academic institutions and was especially instrumental in the founding of the International Institute of Islamic Thought [IIIT] of which he was her first president. He also developed the Islamic Studies program of Temple University where he taught as professor until his assassination on May 27, 1986.

Ismail Raji al-Faruqi (January 1, 1921 – May 27, 1986), philosopher, scholar and activist, is widely acknowledged as a person of profound vision and mission, with deep commitment and high integrity. As an authority on Islam and the West, his concern was not only for Islam and Muslims but also for humanity as a whole. The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) is pleased to announce its Summer Students Program for 2013, which will run for five and a half weeks between Monday, May 27 and Wednesday, July 3, 2013. The program is designed for senior undergraduate and graduate  students who are majoring in the humanities or social science disciplines and who have a particular interest in developing their knowledge and research skills in the core areas of Islamic studies such as Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh or Islamic Jurisprudence, Islamic History and Civilization, Contemporary Islamic Thought and  Muslim World Affairs.  The program also provides in-depth analysis and discussions – in seminar format – on subjects related to contemporary Islamic reform movements, Islamic banking and finance and faith-based entrepreneurship.

During the course of the program, students would complete a total of 200 hours of direct research, instruction and administrative work at IIIT and would receive a certificate of completion from IIIT. Shenandoah University has agreed to offer four credit hours to students who are interested. Those interested in getting credit for the program need to discuss arrangements with their respective institutions and with the Program Director at IIIT. Top performing students may qualify for a one-year, non-resident research fellowship at IIIT that would allow them to continue doing research at IIIT, take online and  other courses and present papers at academic conferences throughout the year.

Accommodation for out-of-area students will be provided by IIIT, if needed. In addition, IIIT will pay each student a scholarship of $1,000 to cover their living and other expenses and to be paid in two installments. Students should have their own health insurance coverage. IIIT does not provide health – or any other form – of insurance to students.

“Islam and the Need for a New Epistemology in 21st Century.”
Third FOCUS Conference, Palembang, 23-24 April, 2010

The Third Forum Cendiakawan Umat Serantau (FOCUS) Conference was held at IAIN Raden Fatah, Palembang from 23 to 24 April, 2010. More than 50 scholars from Indonesia and Malaysia participated in the two days conference representing various academic institutions such as UIAN, IAIN and STAIN.

FOCUS was founded in 2006 as one of the intellectual and scholarly activities initiated by the IIITM (International Institute of Islamic Thought, Malaysia). Its main goal is to provide a healthy forum for Muslim academics and scholars especially from the Southeast Asian region to discourse on important issues pertaining to Islam and the Muslims and intellectual challenges confronting the contemporary Muslim ummah. The first FOCUS conference was held in December 2006 at Cherating, Kuantan, Pahang. FOCUS 2 was held in Kuala Lumpur on 23-25 January 2008.

The program is designed for senior undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in the humanities or social science disciplines and who have a particular interest in developing their knowledge and research skills in the core areas of Islamic studies such as Quran, Hadith, Fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic History and Civilization, contemporary Islamic thought, Muslim world affairs and acquiring training in subjects ranging from Islamic finance to faith based entrepreneurship and research methods for Islamic studies.
During the course of the program, students would complete a total of 200 hours of directed research, instruction and administrative work at IIIT and would receive a certificate of completion from IIIT. Top performing students may qualify for a one year, non-resident research fellowship program at IIIT.

Call for papers : Special Issue on Tradition and Modernity in Muslim Countries in Intellectual Discourse PDF Print E-mail

Muslims, similar to other people, cannot escape the process of modernization and the growing integration and interconnectedness of people and societies around the world. This process can influence people in one of two ways; either, as argued by Fukuyama leading to “… an increasing homogenization of all human societies, regardless of their historical origins or cultural inheritances” (Fukuyama, 1992, p. xiv), or people may become even more aware of their differences as seen in the revival of traditional values and/or a rediscovery of indigenous cultures and religion.

The last decade has witnessed a mushrooming of Islamic movements that view themselves as counterforces to cultural domination by the West. While the goal of these groups is to assert their religious identity in the face of what they regard as imperializing ideas like modernization and secularism, many have also turned to radicalism, especially in circumstances where moderate ways of responding are perceived to be ineffective in producing results.

Many Muslim societies are presently caught at such a crossroad between the traditional and the modern, where the old institutions and values are increasingly being brought in contact with modern forces. But, how they have dealt or are dealing with this situation depends on many factors.

This special issue of Intellectual Discourse aims to publish papers that will examine how Muslims and Muslim countries cope with changes brought about by modernity to be in line with traditions. The following are some subthemes that can be used as guides:

·         Tradition and modernity from the Islamic perspective
·         Islam and secularization
·         Islamizing modernity or modernizing Islam?
·         Responses of Islamic movements to modernity
·         Effects of modernity on people’s well-being
·         Persistence of tradition in the face of modernity
·         Modernity and the crisis of identity
·         State and religion in the age of modernity

The American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences (AJISS), a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, is seeking contributions for its Special Issue on Islamic Ethics, to be published in July 2010.

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers on the following themes:

1. THEME 1: The historical relationship between Islamic jurisprudence or law (usul al-fiqh) and Islamic ethics (ilm al-akhlaq) in all schools of Islamic thought and the resulting implications for the 21st century, especially as regards our understanding and development of contemporary individual or international morality and the relation of ethics and culture;

2. THEME 2: Problems of applied Islamic ethics pertinent (but not limited) to ethics in international affairs (e.g., human rights and global justice); ethical problems of just war, global jihad, and the “war on terror”; research ethics related to science, engineering, and technology; biomedical ethics (e.g., stem cell science and other controversial issues); environmental ethics (e.g., climate change and sustainable energy futures); social responsibility, sustainable economic development, and business ethics; education policy and the moral dimensions of curriculum development and pedagogy at all levels; and moral dilemmas in psychological practice... more
